Hermes ErmhV Hermés

HERMES: As he first appears to Ulysses.

HERMES: As Circe's librarian.

Hermes is a servant of the gods, a spy who, in The Magic Spells of Circe, is sent to keep an eye on Circe, who has aroused the gods' suspicions with the building of her tower of knowledge. He works as the librarian in charge of the tomes Circe collects when she extracts the knowledge from passing travellers.

When Ulysses's crew is captured by Circe the gods see their opportunity and spring their trap. Hermes goes into action, appearing to Ulysses in the form of a young commander who has supposedly lost his crew to Circe. He tells Ulysses how to get to Circe's palace beyond the White Waterfall and waits while Ulysses does the rest.

Circe offers to give Ulysses's companions the route back to Earth provided that he stays behind. Circe freely admits that with the tower of knowledge and Ulysses by her side she will become more powerful than the gods. It is at this point that Hermes reveals his true identity, much to the shock of both Ulysses and Circe.
