| The Magician | The Magician | Le Magicien Noir |
His boast that not even the gods can escape his magic powers leads Ulysses to ask him to bring the companions back to life. He does this, but only after securing Ulysses's agreement to offer something in exchange. It is only when the companions are brought back to life that the Magician tells Ulysses what he wants in return. Ulysses has to choose the three best men of his crew to be the quarry in a hunt run by the Magician and his Chief Servant. Whoever is captured will remain for ever the Magician's slave. Ulysses chooses himself; Numinor and Telemachus volunteer themselves.
During the hunt, which takes place on a simulation of Earth, Ulysses, Numinor and Telemachus consistently stay one step ahead of the Magician, who begins to admire them for their ingenuity.
In the end the Magician uses his powers to even things up, materialising behind Telemachus and aiming an arrow at the back of his head. For a moment the Magician thinks he has won, however from over a ridge appears Nestor, leading a band of companions to the rescue. The Magician accepts defeat and tells them they are free to go. At this point, however, the Magician's Chief Servant, who had been watching from a distance, fires an arrow at the Magician, killing him. The servant bears the sign of the Trident, revealing himself to be an agent of the gods, before fleeing. With the Magician dead the companions once again succumb to the curse of the gods.
