Homer's ancient story of the journey Odysseus is brought into the thirty-first century with a style unique to the French and Japanese production teams who, in 1981, collaborated to produce this work. Jean Chalopin of DIC wrote the stories and produced the animé with the bulk of the work being done in Japan. The first episode was directed by Tadao Nagahama and Bernard Deyries, however Nagahama died afterwards and Deyires continued along the same lines. After Ulysses 31 Chalopin went on to produce The Mysterious Cities of Gold.
